Binding energy

#Chemcat2020
Binding energy is the minimum energy required to disassemble a system of particles into separate parts. This energy is equal to the mass defect minus the amount of energy, or mass, that is released when a bound system is created, and is what keeps the system together.

Binary acids

#Chemcat-2020
Binary acids are certain molecular compounds in which hydrogen is combined with a second nonmetallic element; these acids include HF, HCl, HBr, and HI. HCl, HBr, and HI are all strong acids, whereas HF is a weak acid.

Beta particle

A beta particle, also called beta ray or beta radiation (symbol β), is a high-energy, high-speed electron or positron emitted by the radioactive decay of an atomic nucleus during the process of beta decay. There are two forms of beta decay, β− decay and β+ decay, which produce electrons and positrons respectively.

Azeotrope

An azeotrope or a constant boiling point mixture is a mixture of two or more liquids whose proportions cannot be altered or changed by simple distillation. This happens because when an azeotrope is boiled, the vapour has the same proportions of constituents as the unboiled mixture.

Atomic mass

The atomic mass is the mass of an atom. Although the SI unit of mass is kilogram, the atomic mass is often expressed in the non-SI unit dalton where 1 dalton is defined as ¹⁄₁₂ of the mass of a single carbon-12 atom, at rest.

Atomic number

The number of a chemical element in the periodic system, whereby the elements are arranged in order of increasing number of protons in the nucleus. Accordingly, the number of protons, which is always equal to the number of electrons in the neutral atom, is also the atomic number.

Astatine

Astatine is a radioactive chemical element with the symbol At and atomic number 85. It is the rarest naturally occurring element in the Earth's crust, occurring only as the decay product of various heavier elements.

Arsenic

Arsenic is a chemical element with the symbol As, and atomic number 33. Arsenic occurs in many minerals, usually in combination with sulfur and metals, but also as a pure elemental crystal. Arsenic is a metalloid.

Arrhenius acid

An Arrhenius acid is a substance that dissociates in water to form hydrogen ions or protons. In other words, it increases the number of H+ ions in the water.

Block co-polymer

A block co-polymer is a co-polymer formed when the two monomers cluster together and form 'blocks' of repeating units.

Ion

An ion is an atom or molecule that has a net electrical charge. Since the charge of the electron is equal and opposite to that of the proton, the net charge of an ion is non-zero due to its total number of electrons being unequal to its total number of protons.

Anti-bonding

#Antibonding orbital is a type of molecular orbital (MO) that weakens the chemical bond between two atoms and helps to raise the energy of the molecule relative to the separated atoms.
